tl;dr: Early-stage, a16z-backed biowearables startup hiring a Head of Clinical Product, encompassing responsibility over design and execution of a foundational research program to evaluate biological mechanisms, products, and systems necessary to solve the metabolic health crisis. Core responsibilities include aligning and executing research goals to support company strategy across product, regulatory, intellectual property, and legal. US-timezones, please — around GMT-5 / GMT-8. We're improving people's metabolic fitness using new wearables and data-driven insights. Details about us, the role, and interview process below.

Who we are

Levels is an early-stage startup working to solve the metabolic health crisis. We are doing this by empowering individuals with their continuous glucose data in order to learn insights about how to optimize their diet and lifestyle to maximize current and future health. If you want to know what we're all about, you should check out The Secret Levels Master Plan (just between us), Levels Co-founder Casey's appearance on the Broken Brain podcast, and Levels Co-founder Josh's appearance on The Kevin Rose Show.

Poor metabolic health is a risk factor for many diseases, and few people have the right tools to create tight, positive feedback loops with their diet and exercise. We've seen massive value of using wearables that provide real-time insights, including continuous glucose monitors, to create informed behavior change. Currently these devices are used primarily to treat disease; our mission is to expand access to this technology early, and pair it with insight-driven software, so that people can optimize their health behaviors before they reach clinical thresholds for disease.

We're still in the scrappy startup phase, so are looking for people who are comfortable with ambiguity and having wide impact. We've been remote-first since Day 1 (even pre-COVID!), and care a ton about communication, autonomy, curiosity, and initiative.

We've been running our beta program since early 2020 and have thousands of happy paying members who are using Levels to stabilize their energy levels, lose weight, optimize athletic performance, and learn strategies to reduce risk of chronic disease. Customer excitement has been off the charts. We're currently preparing for a public launch (with more than 100,000 people on our waitlist).

Our team is highly experienced, and has started and sold companies before. We also love learning from each other, and are looking for people who bring a new set of experiences and backgrounds to our team.

Role overview

We are facing a metabolic health epidemic of historic proportions and we need a new approach to confront it. This role will focus on piecing together the technological puzzle — complex biological mechanisms, psychology of behavior, biosensors, regulatory status of medical devices, etc — into a cohesive, evidence based strategy that will make our wellness product and future clinical products the most effective possible for real people in the real world.

First and foremost, we're looking for someone who is excited about what we're doing—you don't need to to be an expert in metabolic health, but should be excited to learn. More than a specific set of skills, we're looking for someone that (1) has the talent/experience/drive/work ethic to manage your own work (2) understands that good employees do what you tell them to do, great employees tell you what they need to do. We're defining a new category (biowearables), so you'll be able to use creativity to help us solve the challenges ahead and achieve better metabolic fitness for our members.

Almost everyone on our team is technical, so this will be among our first major non-technical strategic hires, which means you'll have a wide range of responsibilities within the company. We've listed a few things you'll be responsible for below, but it will also be your job to determine which of these we should spend resources on and which we should not. We don't expect you to have expertise in all of these — but you will be responsible for building a team or finding outside resources that can achieve these goals.

  1. Build out the unified (internal, clinical, and academic) research initiative from the ground up. Become fluent in the Levels company and product strategy and develop the core research function needed to make our company objectives achievable.
  2. Take ownership and execute all ongoing and future research initiatives and allocate resources according to priority as established in your research strategy plan. Manage inbound research opportunities.
  3. Serve as a strategic leader at the company, partnering with founders, team, advisors, and network to create a world class, evidence-based product that enables better behaviors and improved metabolic health and wellness.
  4. Work hand in hand with product and engineering/data-science to build an elegant, scalable, and compliant toolset to activate the one-of-a-kind Levels dataset for large- scale research functions such as aggregated publication, opt-in case studies, and more.
  5. Drive the publication of findings from our research in world-class academic journals. Consistent, effective publication will be a core component of raising awareness of the science underlying solutions to the metabolic health crisis.
